Double Wedding

On Tuesday we went to Woodford Methodist church to watch Evie and Matthew (Robins)and Aimee and Alex(Blackbirds) get 'married'to help the children understand about familiar family celebrations. Each couple had their own best man, bridesmaids and page boys and they all took their roles very seriously - no rings were lost! The mothers and fathers of the brides looked very proud and all the guests turned out in their best clothes to celebrate. Reverend Leigh performed the ceremony and the children made their promises clearly. Afterwards we celebrated in the hall and the brides and bridegrooms cut their beautiful cakes, kindly made by Mrs Sprague. We all enjoyed a cup of juice, a slice of cake and lots of dancing. Some of the children have clearly been having lessons from 'Strictly come dancing'!

BREAKFAST AT WOODFORD

We have been learning about breakfast and how important it is. First we tasted porridge with different toppings. Did you tell everyone at home which was your favourite? Then we tried some different cereals and designed our own cereal which we made last week. We also had a French afternoon and tried some food that the French eat for their breakfast or petit dejeuner. We tried croissants, crepes, pain au chocolat and brioche. We drank jus d'orange and chocolat chaud. It was great fun.

Happy Birthday Barnaby!

Today was Barnaby Bear's birthday. He was 6 years old and the children invited their teddy bears to his party. First some children gave Barnaby cards and we played pass the parcel and musical statues. Then we had a birthday cake with six candles. Some children helped Barnaby blow out his candles. After that we ate some party food and finally after assembly we ate birthday cake for a special playtime snack! Everyone had fun and the children wrote a recount about the party. Some of these were included in the newsletter.

Hector and E-Safety

This week the children have met a new friend. His name is Hector and he is a dolphin. He swims on our computer desktops at school. He is there so that when we use the computers and internet if we see something that makes us feel confused or scared we can click on Hector. A big picture of hector swimming in the sea and some calm water music plays and covers the screen completely while you ask an adult for help.


While our internet filter blocks inappropriate material from the children we do use search engines which can show them pictures of things they don’t like or that scare them like spiders or snakes. Hector has been introduced as a way for children to cope with this.

Christmas ICT activities

In ICT this week we are going to be practising lots of different skills whilst using some different Christmas games, stories and activities. We will be choosing from all the activities below. Clicking on the underlined words will take you to the activities.

Questions about toys

The children have been learning how to ask a good question to find out about toys in the past. They used question words and matched them up with part sentences to make a question that helped them learn some information. We found out that some questions starting with 'Do', 'Could', 'Was' can only have a yes or no answer but questions starting with Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How will tell us more.

Learning Skills

Well done and Thank you to everyone who sent in a design for our new learning skills display. It was hard to choose one for our year group so Mr Brown and I chose three and the children voted for their favourite. This rainbow design by Zoe in the Blackbirds was the most popular with a fishy design coming in a close second. The displays will be up soon so look out for them in class.

International Week

We had fun learning about France and Alaska this week. First we learned to sing 'Head, shoulders, knees and toes' in French. The children in year 6 came and taught us, then we sang to the rest of the school in assembly on Friday. We looked at pictures by the artists Monet and Seurat and then we copied them using paints and pastels. Some of our pictures are on the hall display. We made our own French flags and We answered the register in French this week. Now we are looking forward to learning more after Christmas. Later in the week we found out about the Inuit people in Alaska and how they hunt and live in their cold country. We listened to stories, made sleds and finger masks and we learned a song called 'Okki Tokki Unga' about a boy who goes fishing in a kayak.

Measuring

This week we have been measuring how long things are. We used cubes to measure things in the classroom and some of us cut paper clothes to fit a paper doll shape.

Puppets

Our measuring skills were useful when we designed and made finger puppets. First we chose a character from a fairytale and drew it. Then we cut felt to make clothes for our puppet and added details using wool, sequins and more felt. Don't they look great? Now we are ready to make up stories.
